Frequent Yatra Suspensions Could Seriously Impact Vaishno Devi Pilgrimage: HRAK & PHDCCI
Katra : A joint delegation from the Hotel and Restaurant Association, Katra (HRAK) and the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) met with the Chief Executive Officer of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board to discuss the management of the Vaishno Devi Yatra during adverse weather conditions.
The delegation, led by Rakesh Wazir, proposed that instead of completely suspending the pilgrimage, pilgrims should be diverted through safer alternative routes when feasible. They highlighted historical data indicating a low incidence of landslide-related fatalities on the traditional track, suggesting that newly developed pathways could facilitate continued access during inclement weather. The delegation emphasized the importance of pilgrimage tourism to Katra’s economy and the need for improved infrastructure and visitor facilities to maintain the shrine’s status as a premier pilgrimage destination. They also requested financial relief for Shrine Board licensees affected by previous disruptions, advocating for waivers or extensions of license fees similar to those provided during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the delegation called for increased manpower and RFID registration counters at the Katra Railway Station to enhance crowd management and reduce waiting times. They urged the development of a comprehensive master plan for Katra’s integrated development, focusing on civic infrastructure improvements. The CEO assured the delegation that their concerns would be addressed thoughtfully.
