Srinagar :  The Centre of Central Asian Studies (CCAS) at the University of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Philosophical Research, hosted a national seminar titled “The Social Life of Yoga: From Tradition to Contemporary Practice.”

The event aimed to explore Yoga through social, cultural, and philosophical lenses focused on its transformation from a traditional practice to its modern applications in health, well-being, and community engagement. The seminar provided an interdisciplinary platform for scholars to discuss Yoga’s relevance in today’s society. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan emphasized Yoga’s integral role in India’s cultural heritage and the importance of universities in facilitating academic discourse on its various dimensions. Dean Academic Affairs Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada highlighted the necessity of engaging with India’s knowledge traditions through academic inquiry, advocating for interdisciplinary discussions that address Yoga’s historical and contemporary significance. Dean Students’ Welfare Prof. Seema Singh pointed out Yoga’s benefits for physical and mental health, urging increased awareness among students regarding its broader educational and societal implications. Prof. Wahid Nasaru, Director of CCAS and seminar convenor, welcomed participants and underscored the importance of scholarly dialogue on Yoga’s philosophical underpinnings and its evolving role in modern contexts. The seminar, coordinated by Dr. Parvana Bhat, attracted a diverse audience, including faculty, researchers, and students, fostering a rich exchange of ideas. The inaugural session was led by Dr. Mohmad Ilham Sheikh.
