· Forecasts torrential showers till August 7
· Issues advisory for flash floods, landslides in vulnerable areas
Srinagar: The Meteorological Centre (MET), Srinagar on Thursday forecast a fresh spell of light to moderate rain and thundershowers across Jammu and Kashmir over the next several days, with possibility of heavy to torrential rainfall, flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas of Jammu division.
Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad told Kashmir Horizon that they were expecting fresh spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers at most places across the Union Territory on July 31st.
He said few places in the Jammu division could experience brief but intense heavy showers and torrential rainfall.
Dr Mukhtar said that on August 1, scattered places are likely to receive a spell of light rain or brief thundershowers, with isolated intense showers expected at some locations.
“Another active weather phase will follow it is likely between August 2 and 4, when many places are expected to receive a few spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers. Few districts of the Jammu division may witness heavy rain, intense showers and torrential rainfall during this period,” he said.
Dr Mukhtar said that from August 5 to 7, the weather is expected to remain generally unsettled, with scattered places likely to receive light to moderate rain and thundershowers accompanied by brief intense showers.
Issuing an advisory, the Meteorological Centre warned of the possibility of heavy rainfall and intense showers in a few districts of the Jammu division on July 30, July 31, August 2 and August 3.
It cautioned that torrential rain and brief intense showers could trigger flash floods, landslides, mudslides and shooting stones at vulnerable locations, particularly in hilly and mountainous areas.
It also advised residents, commuters and tourists to remain vigilant, avoid venturing into flood-prone and landslide-prone areas during periods of intense rainfall, and follow updates issued by the administration and disaster management authorities.
