Srinagar : Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Youth Services & Sports and Science & Technology, Satish Sharma, Tuesday reviewed the progress of key renewable energy, science and technology initiatives being implemented across Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating the Government’s commitment to accelerate sustainable development, clean energy adoption and scientific innovation across the Union Territory.
The Minister thoroughly reviewed initiatives takem by the Department of Science & Technology, JAKEDA, and JKSTIC and discussed various flagship programs such as rooftop solarization of government buildings, small hydro power projects, and the implementation of PM-KUSUM. The meeting included senior officials, highlighting the collaborative effort in advancing renewable energy in Jammu and Kashmir. Significant progress was noted in the Solarization of Government Buildings Programme, with 8,181 buildings solarized, achieving an installed capacity of 85.8 MW, positioning Jammu and Kashmir third among Indian states and union territories. Under the CAPEX model, 3,388 buildings have been solarized, while the RESCO model targets 175 MW across nearly 8,000 buildings. The Minister emphasized the importance of expanding renewable energy infrastructure to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency in government institutions. In the agricultural sector, the PM-KUSUM initiative has seen applications for 4,891 solar-powered pumps, with 4,876 already installed, significantly improving irrigation for farmers. The review also covered the broader renewable energy landscape, revealing that approximately 250 MW of rooftop solar capacity is either installed or in progress, alongside substantial contributions from JAKEDA and other initiatives. The Minister underscored Jammu and Kashmir’s hydro power potential, with 58 identified projects totaling 323.90 MW. He urged for expedited project execution to ensure reliable energy access in remote areas. Additionally, the construction of the Sub-Regional Science Centre and the Industrial Biotechnology Park is progressing, with a focus on fostering innovation and supporting the scientific community. The Minister articulated a vision for a technologically advanced and sustainable Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing the role of investments in renewable energy and scientific research in driving economic growth and job creation. He directed officials to adhere to project timelines and ensure efficient resource utilization to maximize the benefits of these initiatives for the community.
