Ganderbal, July 27 :Within the span of a day, central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district witnessed a series of unrelated incidents that claimed three lives and left another person hospitalised, officials said on Monday.

An official said Altaf Ahmad Khattana, a resident of Bagh Patti Surfraw in Kangan, succumbed to injuries at SKIMS Soura on Monday, a day after his motorcycle reportedly skidded and overturned on the Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri (SSG) Road near Sumbalbala Gund.

Khattana was initially taken to Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Kangan before being referred to SKIMS Soura for specialised treatment. Despite sustained medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

In another incident reported on Monday, an elderly woman died after being struck by a JCB machine in the Badarkund area of Ganderbal.

The official said she was shifted to District Hospital Ganderbal with critical injuries, where doctors declared her brought dead. She was identified as Hajra, wife of Abdul Ahad Reshi, a resident of Reshipora.

Later in the day, a woman was found hanging inside her residence in the Bobsipora area of the district. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Her identity has been withheld. Police have initiated inquest proceedings to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death.

In a separate incident, a young woman from the Kangan area was admitted to SDH Kangan after allegedly consuming a poisonous substance at her residence. Following preliminary treatment, she was referred to SKIMS Soura for specialised medical care. Her condition was not immediately known.

Police have initiated separate proceedings in all four cases.

While the incidents were unrelated and occurred in different parts of the district, together they marked an unusually difficult 24 hours for Ganderbal. For three families, the day ended in bereavement; for another, it continues in anxious hope as relatives await updates from a hospital ward. Beyond the official records and police investigations, the incidents serve as a reminder of how suddenly lives can change, leaving behind grief, uncertainty and unanswered questions.
