MeitY AI CoE to be operational by August 2026
Srinagar: Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo, Thursday chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the progress made on the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in governance in Jammu and Kashmir and the establishment of the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence here
The meeting besides the concerned Administrative Secretaries was attended by the Representatives from Indian Institute of Technology Jammu; BISAG and other concerned officers of the Union Territory.
Addressing the meeting Chief Secretary highlighted the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in governance, emphasizing its role in enhancing efficiency, transparency, responsiveness, and the quality of public services. He urged the government to utilize emerging technologies strategically, integrating them into the existing digital ecosystem to optimize resource use and improve citizen service delivery. The Chief Secretary called for proactive collaboration between Administrative Departments and the Information Technology Department to expedite the implementation of identified AI use cases, stressing the importance of appointing dedicated nodal officers and ensuring the timely sharing of quality datasets for the development and validation of AI solutions. He underscored the critical need for data quality, interoperability, and departmental ownership in the successful deployment of AI applications. To facilitate structured implementation, he directed the organization of sector-specific workshops involving nodal officers, technology partners, and domain experts to assess data availability and operational workflows before initiating pilot projects. This collaborative approach aims to create realistic implementation roadmaps and identify operational challenges early in the process. The Chief Secretary also emphasized the necessity of regular monitoring of AI initiatives through defined milestones and outcome indicators to address implementation bottlenecks promptly. During the meeting, the Commissioner Secretary IT presented an overview of the organizational framework and implementation strategy for AI initiatives, including progress on the establishment of the MeitY Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence at IIT Jammu. This center is part of a national initiative to accelerate AI adoption in governance, with preparations underway for operational readiness. The meeting reviewed the status of twenty identified AI use cases across eight priority sectors, including Education, Agriculture, and Health, and noted consultations with academic institutions and technology providers for tailored AI solutions. The commitment from all departments and partner institutions to expedite the AI roadmap aims to leverage AI as a key driver for transparent and efficient governance in Jammu and Kashmir.
