Srinagar| July, 22: What began as an ordinary attempt to collect firewood to warm their home ended in extraordinary heartbreak when a mother and her teenage son were swept away by flash floods in Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
Torrential rains in the upper reaches of Bonibal Tangath suddenly transformed a local stream into a ferocious, overflowing torrent, catching 14-year-old Amir Khatana and his mother, Gudi Begum, off guard as they attempted to retrieve floating wood from the rushing waters. The sudden surge overwhelmed them both in a matter of moments, triggering an agonizing search by family, neighbors, and emergency responders along the roaring banks. Rescue teams recovered Amir’s body from the Guzarbal area later that afternoon, but hours of fragile hope for his mother ended at dusk when rescuers discovered Gudi Begum’s body in the same nallah. In a single day, a village already mourning the loss of Amir’s late father, Mehboob Khatana, was left shattered by the complete loss of a family, leaving behind an open-doored quiet and a grief far deeper than words.
