Srinagar : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday visited the Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS) in Srinagar and interacted with para athletes, children with special needs and members of the organisation, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to the empowerment, rehabilitation and sports development of persons with disabilities across Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.
During the visit, the Lieutenant Governor held discussions with office bearers of the organisation and para athletes on strengthening the ecosystem for adaptive sports and improving rehabilitation facilities for Divyangjan. The deliberations focused on the need for robotic physiotherapy equipment, enhanced healthcare and skill development facilities, the establishment of a Jammu and Kashmir Para Sports Association, development of an indoor para sports hall and provision of specialised sports wheelchairs, modern training equipment, coaching camps, exposure programmes and travel assistance for athletes.
Addressing the gathering, Sinha said the Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remains committed to ensuring equal opportunities and holistic development of persons with disabilities.
He said para athletes from Jammu and Kashmir have brought laurels to the Union Territory at national and international levels in recent years and assured that the administration would continue to provide world-class infrastructure and institutional support to nurture their talent.
The Lieutenant Governor also lauded the contribution of the Voluntary Medicare Society, which has been serving persons with disabilities for over five decades through healthcare, education, livelihood support and community inclusion.
“Whenever meaningful social change occurs, it is driven by passionate individuals like Dr. Mir Mohammad Maqbool and all those serving here. Today, I connect myself with the Voluntary Medicare Society just as its office bearers and volunteers dedicate themselves to this noble cause,” he said.
Sinha toured the rehabilitation units, wards and other facilities of the institution and interacted with children with special needs.
During the visit, VMS Founder and President Dr. Mir Mohammad Maqbool and Vice President Prof. Masooda Yasin highlighted the need for creating a robust institutional framework for para sports and sought government support for strengthening rehabilitation and sports infrastructure in the Union Territory.
Senior officials, including Dr. G.V. Sundeep Chakravarthy, SSP Srinagar, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar AkshayLabroo, besides office bearers, coaches and staff of the Voluntary Medicare Society, were present on the occasion.
