New Delhi, July 21 (UNI) Activist and education reform campaigner Sonam Wangchuk remained under close medical observation at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday, with doctors reporting that his vital parameters were stable but cautioning that several clinical indicators continued to require intensive monitoring as he persisted with his indefinite hunger strike.
According to the latest health bulletin issued by the hospital, Wangchuk’s blood sugar levels continue to remain below normal. Laboratory tests also showed a serum potassium level of 3.2 mEq/L, while he continues to suffer from persistent pancytopenia, a condition marked by anaemia and reduced white blood cell counts.
Doctors said these findings necessitate continuous monitoring through serial clinical investigations. The bulletin added that Wangchuk is being administered oral rehydration solution (ORS) and oral potassium supplements but has continued to decline intravenous fluids and glucose despite repeated medical advice.
The Ladakh-based activist was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18, the 21st day of his hunger strike, after doctors warned that prolonged fasting had become life-threatening.
On Monday, following the protest demonstration, he announced that he would continue the agitation until youth leaders leading the protest over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak are either allowed to meet Members of Parliament inside Parliament House or parliamentarians visit him at the hospital.
In a handwritten message shared by his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, Wangchuk expressed solidarity with students participating in the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led movement and criticised the police action during the protest march towards Parliament.
“I will continue my fast (day 23). Seeing the brutality with which peacefully protesting youth are being dealt with, I have decided to continue my fast until the youth leaders are allowed to meet the Parliamentarians at the Sansad Bhawan or I am allowed to meet them here at the hospital,” he wrote.
