Late-night sighting near Fish Point sparks caution as Wildlife Department urges tourists to maintain a safe distance from wild animals
Ganderbal, July 21: A Himalayan brown bear along with its two cubs was spotted near the popular Fish Point area of Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district during the late-night hours, prompting the Wildlife Protection Department to urge tourists, local residents and motorists to exercise caution.
The bear family was seen roaming near the tourist hotspot, drawing the attention of visitors and locals. Officials said no injuries or damage were reported following the sighting.
Located amid dense forests and alpine meadows, Sonamarg is part of the natural habitat of the Himalayan brown bear and several other wildlife species. Wildlife officials said such sightings are occasional, particularly during the summer season when increased tourist activity overlaps with wildlife movement along forest fringes.
Officials noted that similar sightings have been reported from different parts of Sonamarg in previous years, underscoring the need for heightened public awareness in areas close to wildlife habitats.
The Wildlife Protection Department appealed to the public not to approach, feed, provoke or attempt to photograph wild animals from close range, warning that such actions can trigger unpredictable behaviour and pose a threat to both humans and wildlife.
The department advised visitors to remain vigilant, maintain a safe distance from any wild animal and immediately inform the nearest wildlife or police authorities about any unusual wildlife movement to enable timely response.
Officials also reiterated that respecting wildlife habitats and adhering to safety guidelines are essential to ensuring the safety of visitors while protecting the fragile ecosystem and rich biodiversity of the Sonamarg region.
