Wangchuk sets three conditions to call off fast, seeks action on NEET leak

New Delhi, July 20 (UNI) Activist and education reform campaigner Sonam Wangchuk on Monday announced that he is willing to end his indefinite hunger strike if three key assurances are provided by the government and political leadership regarding his demands on education reforms and the alleged NEET paper leak.

In a handwritten note issued from Safdarjung Hospital, Wangchuk said he would discontinue his fast only after his conditions were met. He alleged that he was being kept under “illegal detention” and claimed that his movement, speech and communication had been curtailed.

According to the letter, shared on his X account, Wangchuk’s primary demand is for the government to acknowledge responsibility for what he described as serious shortcomings in the education system, including the alleged NEET examination paper leak.

His second demand is that political parties ensure the issue is taken up during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

He further said that if his medical condition prevents him from joining the proposed march to Parliament, senior political leaders should visit him at the hospital and personally assure him that the first two demands would be acted upon.

Wangchuk joined the Cockroach Janta Party’s protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on June 28 and began an indefinite hunger strike demanding the resignation of union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak issue.

The activist was taken to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police on July 18 after his health worsened during the 21st day of his fast. The police action came after doctors reportedly warned that his prolonged fasting had become life-threatening, raising concerns about possible organ failure.

The Delhi High Court had also directed the authorities to take all necessary measures to safeguard his life, following which he was admitted to the hospital, where he continues to remain under medical care.
