Calls for immediate relief, rehabilitation for affected families

Srinagar : The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah has expressed profound grief over the tragic loss of lives and extensive damage caused by landslides and flash floods triggered by torrential rains and cloudbursts in Poonch and Rajouri districts.

Dr. Farooq conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the natural calamity and expressed solidarity with them during this difficult time. He noted with deep sorrow that at least ten people have lost their lives, while several others are feared trapped beneath the debris. He paid rich tributes to the Police, SDRF personnel, civil administration, and local volunteers, who have continued rescue and relief operations despite adverse weather conditions and extremely challenging terrain.

He said that the government has launched a large-scale operation to clear debris and restore connectivity to cut-off villages by deploying heavy machinery and adequate manpower. He also said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been personally monitoring rescue and relief operations since early morning.

Dr. Farooq observed that the flash floods and landslides have caused extensive damage to houses, vehicles, roads, bridges, and other public and private property. He urged the government to conduct an immediate assessment of the losses and provide adequate financial assistance to all affected families.

He further appealed to the administration to make urgent arrangements for shelter, food, and other essential facilities for those rendered homeless or whose houses have become uninhabitable, and to initiate their rehabilitation on a war footing.

Expressing concern over the damage caused by flash floods in Kishtwar, Gurez, and other areas, Dr. Farooq urged the authorities to restore road connectivity without delay to minimize hardships faced by the public.

Senior National Conference leader and Member of Parliament Mian Altaf Ahmad, Rajya Sabha Member Sajad Ahmad Kichloo and MLA Poonch Ajaz Jan also expressed grief over the loss of life and property. The leaders remained in constant touch with the local administration and are closely monitoring the ongoing rescue and relief operations.(KNS)
