Srinagar: From India’s private space breakthrough and Kashmir’s continuing heatwave to entrepreneurship, healthcare reforms and the Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorative ride, here are the top developments making headlines today.
1. India Enters Private Space Era with Vikram-1 Launch: India scripted a new chapter in its space journey as Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Mission Aagaman, the maiden flight of Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket. The 24-metre carbon-composite rocket is capable of carrying payloads of up to 350 kg into Low Earth Orbit, marking a major milestone in opening India’s space sector to private enterprise. The maiden mission also carried Bengaluru-based Cosmos Diamonds’ “Diamond Lotus,” highlighting growing commercial opportunities in India’s expanding space economy.
2. Kashmir Heatwave Intensifies | Srinagar Records Third-Hottest July Day: Kashmir remained in the grip of an intense heatwave as Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 35°C, nearly five degrees above normal and the third-highest July daytime temperature since 2016. Kupwara also touched 35°C, while Qazigund, Kokernag, Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded above-normal temperatures. As the mercury soared, children across the Valley sought relief by swimming in rivers, streams and canals, while weather officials have forecast widespread rainfall beginning July 19.
3. J&K Bank Crosses 30,000 Mission YUVA Loan Sanctions: J&K Bank achieved a major milestone by sanctioning over 30,000 loans under the Government of Jammu & Kashmir’s flagship Mission YUVA initiative. Of the 30,063 sanctioned cases, more than 26,580 loans have already been disbursed, supporting thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs across the Union Territory. MD & CEO Amitava Chatterjee termed the achievement a testament to the Bank’s commitment towards promoting youth entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.
4. Centre Reviews Ayushman Bharat, Digital Health Mission: The National Health Authority began a two-day national review meeting in New Delhi to assess the implementation of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. Union Minister of State Prataprao Jadhav released the NHA Annual Report and implementation guidelines while highlighting that the flagship health scheme has facilitated cashless treatments worth over ₹1.91 lakh crore through more than 37,000 empanelled hospitals, making it the world’s largest health assurance programme.
5. ‘Shaurya Vijay Yatra’ Rides To Honour Kargil Heroes: As part of the Kargil Vijay Diwas 2026 commemorations, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off the 13-day Shaurya Vijay Yatra from the National War Memorial in New Delhi. The 1,900-km motorcycle expedition, involving 28 riders including serving and retired defence personnel and their family members, will conclude at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras. The expedition, carrying the motto “One Ride, One Nation, One Salute,” pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who secured India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War.
