Srinagar, July 18: Srinagar on Saturday recorded the hottest day of the season as the maximum temperature touched 35.9°C, even as the Meteorological Department forecast a major change in weather from July 19 to July 23 with widespread rain and thundershowers across Jammu and Kashmir.
An official of MeT told GNS that, the Union Territory is likely to witness generally cloudy skies with intermittent spells of rain and thundershowers during the five-day period. Heavy rain, brief intense showers and torrential downpours are expected at a few places, mainly during late afternoon, evening and late night to morning hours.
The department has issued a special warning for Reasi and Udhampur districts of Jammu division, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected, with isolated places likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall.
Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Rajouri, Doda, Ramban and Kishtwar are also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain between July 19 and July 23, the MeT said, adding that this increases the risk of weather-related hazards.
The department has warned of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, significant rise in water levels of rivers and tributaries, minor flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.
Weather is expected to improve from July 24 to July 27, though a few places may continue to see brief spells of rain or thundershowers.
The MeT has advised the public and concerned authorities to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas during heavy rainfall, and stay updated with official weather advisories.
Farmers have also been urged to suspend all farming operations during the forecast period in view of the expected adverse weather. (GNS)
