Srinagar, July 13: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Jammu & Kashmir unit, has served Rs 100 crore legal notice to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over his recent allegations that the party attempted to topple the National Conference-led government by offering bribes to its MLAs.
According to the legal notice dated July 13, issued through advocate Parimoksh Seth on behalf of BJP J&K President and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Paul Sharma, the party termed the Chief Minister’s allegations as “false, baseless and defamatory.”
The notice refers to Omar Abdullah’s statement made on July 11, wherein he had alleged that BJP functionaries approached some National Conference legislators from the Jammu region with offers of ₹20–30 crore, ministerial berths and the promise of restoration of statehood in exchange for switching allegiance to the BJP.
The BJP has denied the allegations, asserting that the statements are “entirely untrue, malicious and without any factual basis” and have caused serious damage to the party’s reputation and public image.
The legal notice further asks the Chief Minister to withdraw the allegations in writing, issue an unconditional public apology within seven days, refrain from making or circulating any further defamatory statements, and cease repeating the allegations.
It also warns that failure to comply with the demands would compel the BJP to initiate appropriate civil and criminal proceedings, including a defamation suit seeking damages of ₹100 crore, besides other legal remedies available under law.
