Awantipora : Police has apprehended two persons and seized two motorboats during a crackdown on illegal sand extraction from the River Jhelum in Awantipora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
In a statement issued here on Monday Police said that while acting on specific inputs a police team from Police Station Awantipora raided Gagri Bal and caught the accused allegedly extracting sand illegally using motorboats, causing damage to the riverbanks.
The accused were identified as Reyees Ahmad Bhat, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat, and Sabzar Ahmad Bhat, son of Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, both residents of Bahoo, Awantipora. The two motorboats used in the illegal activity were seized on the spot. Police have registered FIR No. 161/2026 under the relevant provisions of law at Police Station Awantipora, and further investigation is underway.
In its statement Police reiterated its commitment to take strict legal action against illegal mining and other activities that threaten the environment and public resources.
