‘Never seen Kashmir awake for sports at 4:30 am before’

Srinagar: Asserting that growing sports culture in Baramulla is steering young people away from drugs, divisive narratives and misinformation, General Officer Commanding, Dagger Division, Major General Manoj Joshi on Monday said that sports are becoming a way of life for the youth and the people in North Kashmir.
Speaking at the inauguration of Varmul Gindo 3.0, the GOC of 19 Infantry Division, Major General Manoj Joshi said, “Sports have emerged as a catalyst for change in the district and are playing a vital role in shaping the future of its youth. The multi discipline sports festival will witness the participation of nearly 3,700 athletes competing in 23 sporting disciplines.”
Highlighting the changing atmosphere in the district, the GOC referred to the Baramulla Marathon held on Sunday and said the public response reflected a remarkable shift in people’s attitude towards sports.
“I have never seen Kashmir awake for sports at 4.30 am before. Hundreds of people had gathered during the early morning hours for the marathon. It shows that sports are becoming a way of life for the youth and the people of Baramulla,” he said.
The GOC expressed confidence that if the present momentum continues, Baramulla has the potential to emerge as a sports city.
He said sporting activities are bridging social gaps and providing young people with meaningful opportunities to channelise their energy in a positive direction. “Sports are helping youth reject drugs and divisive narratives”, he added.
Referring to the recent rumours circulated on social media about an alleged terrorist attack in Baramulla and claims regarding the suspension of the Amarnath Yatra, the GOC said such misinformation was aimed at disturbing peace and creating fear among the public.
He said sports provide a constructive alternative by promoting unity, resilience and hope, while discouraging propaganda spread by enemies of peace.
“Sports channelise the energy of our youth into positivity. They help build stronger individuals and a more developed society,” he added.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by the MLAs of Baramulla, Wagoora Kreeri and Gulmarg, senior Army officers, civil administration officials and other dignitaries. The event also witnessed enthusiastic participation from athletes, students and members of the public
