Youm-e-Ashura Observed with Religious Fervour and Solemnity in Ganderbal

Ganderbal, June 26: Youm-e-Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala, was observed with profound religious devotion and solemnity across central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Friday.

Thousands of mourners gathered in Dab and several other parts of the district to participate in Zuljanah processions, majlis gatherings and special prayers marking the 10th day of Muharram. The commemorations drew people from different age groups, who assembled to pay homage to Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his companions, whose supreme sacrifice at Karbala is remembered as an enduring symbol of truth, justice and resistance against oppression.

The atmosphere remained sombre as mourners, dressed in black, took part in the processions while elegies and religious recitations echoed through the area, recounting the events of Karbala and the unparalleled sacrifices made by Imam Hussain (AS), his family members and companions.

Addressing the gatherings, religious scholars and community leaders highlighted the significance of Ashura, saying the message of Karbala continues to inspire humanity to uphold justice, compassion and moral courage.

“Karbala is not merely a historical event but a timeless lesson in sacrifice, faith and steadfastness. The life and martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) continue to inspire people across generations to stand firmly for truth and resist injustice under all circumstances,” the speakers said.

They also appealed to the Muslim Ummah to remain united and strengthen the values of peace, brotherhood and communal harmony, saying the teachings of Imam Hussain (AS) remain relevant in addressing contemporary social and moral challenges.

Several service camps were established by volunteers and local organisations along the procession routes, where water and other essential items were distributed among mourners. The gesture symbolised the hardships endured by Imam Hussain (AS), his family and companions, who were denied access to water before attaining martyrdom on the plains of Karbala.

The district administration, police and health department made elaborate arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the religious observances. Security personnel remained deployed at sensitive locations, while medical teams and emergency services were stationed along the procession routes to provide assistance whenever required.

Mourners appreciated the arrangements made by the authorities, saying the coordinated efforts of various departments ensured that the day-long commemorations concluded peacefully and without any disruption.

Special prayers were offered for peace, prosperity and communal harmony at the conclusion of the observances. As the processions dispersed, the memory of Karbala continued to resonate among the faithful, reaffirming the timeless ideals of sacrifice, justice, patience and unwavering faith that have defined the legacy of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) for more than fourteen centuries.
