Sopore : Police on Saturday conducted a public auction of conveyances seized in various NDPS cases in Sopore  after obtaining the requisite orders from competent courts under Section 52A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

According to a Police statement issued here on Saturday the auction was held at the District Police Lines (DPL) Sopore under the supervision of the District Drug Disposal Committee and was conducted in a transparent and lawful manner, officials said.

A total of 15 bidders participated in the auction process. During the proceedings, a Maruti WagonR bearing registration number JK05A-7505, which had been seized in connection with an NDPS case, was successfully auctioned for Rs 35,000.

Police said the reserve price for the remaining seized conveyances could not be achieved during the auction. Consequently, those vehicles will be put up for re-auction through a fresh process in accordance with the prescribed legal procedure.

Officials said that the disposal of vehicles seized in NDPS cases is part of a broader strategy aimed at ensuring effective management of seized assets, preventing their deterioration during prolonged judicial proceedings and denying offenders the continued benefit of conveyances used in narcotics-related crimes.

The process also ensures that all seized properties are dealt with strictly in accordance with legal provisions and orders passed by competent courts.

Reiterating its commitment to combating the drug menace, police said it would continue targeting every component of the narcotics ecosystem, including the logistical infrastructure used for trafficking and transportation of contraband substances.
