Udhampur :Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Minga Sherpa Monday chaired a meeting of the Regional Transport Authority and District Road Safety Committee to review and strengthen road safety measures in the district.

The meeting was attended by the Superintending Engineer PWD, along with district officers from the stakeholder departments.

The meeting also deliberated on ensuring strict enforcement of traffic regulations and adopting effective measures to minimize road accidents. Stress was laid on regular road maintenance, curbing overloading, rash driving and generating awareness, besides improving traffic management system, decongesting busy routes, installing proper signage and carrying out safety audits of all major roads across the district.

The Deputy Commissioner exhorted the concerned departments to work in close coordination, enforce strict adherence to road safety norms, expedite execution of safety-related works and regularly monitor vulnerable stretches. He also emphasized the need for organizing continuous road safety awareness programmes in colleges and other educational institutions.

Executive Engineers of PWD and PMGSY were directed to ensure regular maintenance of roads to prevent mishaps. They were further instructed to identify black spots and undertake corrective measures such as installation of signboards, road markings and installation of crash barriers at vulnerable locations.

Highlighting the importance of awareness and enforcement, the Deputy Commissioner directed the Motor Vehicles Department and Traffic Police to take stern action against violators, particularly those involved in overloading, riding without helmets and indulging in rash driving.
