Srinagar:Voluntary Medicare Society(VMS) today organized a large-scale distribution and training program of Saarthi Smart Canes and smart mobility devices for 200 visually impaired persons from across Jammu & Kashmir at its Head Office, Bemina, Srinagar.
The initiative focused on enhancing independent mobility, safety, dignity, and inclusion for individuals with visual impairments through innovative assistive technology. The event was presided over by Dr. Akramullah Tak, Additional Commissioner of Kashmir, and attended by notable figures including Prof. (Dr.) Mir Mohammad Maqbool, President/Founder of VMS, and representatives from Hyundai India Insurance Broking Pvt. Ltd. During the event, Mr. Arshad from Athwas announced the sponsorship of advanced assistive devices for five visually impaired students, marking a significant step in support for the community. Mr. Amit highlighted that his company had initiated the distribution of smart canes as part of their first corporate social responsibility project in the North, with plans for a subsequent camp in Jammu. Torchit Electronics, a recognized social startup, collaborated as the technology and implementation partner, providing hands-on training for beneficiaries on the use of Saarthi Smart Canes and other smart mobility devices. The participants expressed their gratitude towards the sponsors and the Voluntary Medicare Society for facilitating access to advanced assistive technologies, which foster greater confidence and independence among visually impaired individuals.
