Division of Agronomy Organises Millet Awareness Programme in Handwara

Handwara: The Division of Agronomy organised a promotional and motivational programme for farmers and rural youth at Gund Razak in Handwara under HADP-08 titled “Promotion of Nutricereals (Millets) in UT of J&K” with the aim of popularising millet cultivation and creating awareness about their nutritional, economic and ecological importance in sustainable agriculture.
The programme witnessed active participation of farmers and rural youth from the village. On the occasion, quality millet seed was distributed among participating farmers to encourage adoption of improved millet cultivation practices and promote seed production at the farm level for strengthening livelihood and nutritional security in rural communities.
The programme was led by Dr. Bashir Ahmad Alie, Professor and Head, Division of Agronomy, who highlighted the increasing significance of millets as climate-resilient crops and stressed their role in sustainable agricultural development, resource conservation and diversification of farm income.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Lal Singh, Professor, Division of Agronomy and Principal Investigator of the Millet Project, spoke about the objectives of HADP-08 in promoting millet-based farming systems and encouraging cultivation of nutrient-rich and environmentally sustainable crops.
Dr. Amjad Masood, Associate Professor, and Dr.Raies Ahmad Bhat, Assistant Professor, both Co-Principal Investigators of HADP-08, also addressed the participants and shared insights on improved production technologies, scientific crop management practices and the role of millets in ensuring food and nutritional security.
