Srinagar : Chief Minister Omar Abdullahon Wednesday said the government is planning to host more national-level golf tournaments to position Kashmir as a premier golfing destination, highlighting that the Valley boasts some of the finest golf courses in the country.

The Chief Minister was speaking after inaugurating the India Golf Carnival 2026 at the Royal Springs Golf Course in Srinagar. He подчеркнул Kashmir’s long-standing association with the sport and its world-class golfing infrastructure spread across Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam.

“Kashmir has a very old relationship with golf. Our courses are among the most scenic and best in the country,” he said, adding that the government is committed to promoting the sport while leveraging it to boost tourism.

Omar Abdullah said the administration is focusing on encouraging local golfers and inspiring youth to take up the sport, alongside attracting players from across the country.

“This tournament is a step towards strengthening golf culture in Kashmir. We want to support local talent and motivate the younger generation to participate,” he said.

Over 100 golfers, including participants from various parts of India, took part in the event, reflecting the Valley’s growing popularity among golf enthusiasts. The Chief Minister noted that golfers from outside Jammu and Kashmir are increasingly visiting Srinagar during long weekends specifically to play.

“In North India, many golfers are now choosing Srinagar as a preferred destination during long weekends. This trend will certainly give a boost to tourism,” he added.

He further said that the government, in coordination with tourism authorities and event organisers, is working on a roadmap to host more such events and strengthen Kashmir’s presence on the national and global golfing map.

“Our aim is to organise more tournaments and maintain our golf courses at par with the best in the country, making Kashmir a hub for golf tourism,” he said.
