Dhaka, May 5 (UNI) Bangladesh recorded 17 deaths linked to measles and suspected measles-related complications, the highest number reported in a single day since the outbreak of this highly contagious yet preventable disease began in March, media reports said on Tuesday.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), of the deaths reported by 8 a.m. on Monday, two were confirmed to be related to measles, while the other 15 were classified as suspected cases.
Of the suspected deaths, the highest 10 were recorded in the Dhaka district, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
As of the latest reports, the overall count of confirmed fatalities attributed to measles has increased to 52. In addition, the number of suspected deaths related to the disease is currently at 259, with these figures being recorded since March 15.
Around 1,302 suspected measles cases were recorded during the same period, taking the total number of suspected cases to 41,793 since March 15, DGHS officials said.
During the same period, 154 new confirmed measles cases were reported, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 5,467, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
As of March 15, there have been 28,832 suspected cases of measles hospitalisation reported. Out of these cases, 25,151 patients have successfully recovered from the illness.
