“The extended Vande Bharat service a landmark step transforming connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir, saying it is boosting passenger travel, strengthening freight movement, reducing costs of essentials, and driving tourism, with 100% occupancy reflecting strong public demand,” Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

This week in a landmark moment for Jammu & Kashmir’s connectivity and economic transformation, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the extended 20-coach Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, ushering in a new phase of seamless rail travel between the two regions.  The expansion of the service-from 8 to 20 coaches-signals not only rising demand but also a structural shift in how people and goods move across the Union Territory. The flag-off ceremony at Jammu Railway Station was attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Members of Parliament, and senior railway officials, reflecting the significance of the occasion.

A Long-Awaited Rail Link Becomes Reality: Calling it a “long-awaited day” for the people of Jammu & Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the direct Jammu–Srinagar rail connectivity as a historic breakthrough. “Today, we have connected Jammu with Kashmir through railways. This is not just connectivity, but the beginning of a new phase of development,” he said. For decades, the idea of seamless rail travel between Jammu and Srinagar remained an aspiration. With the operationalisation and expansion of the Vande Bharat service, that vision has now been realized. The new link reduces reliance on road transport, often disrupted by weather and terrain, and provides a reliable, year-round alternative.

From 8 To 20 Coaches | Meeting Surging Demand: The decision to expand the Vande Bharat Express from 8 to 20 coaches reflects its overwhelming success. According to officials, the service has recorded nearly 100% occupancy since its launch, with over 5.5 lakh passengers already using the train. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah highlighted the scale of demand, noting that capacity has increased from around 500 passengers to nearly 1,400 per trip. “With two trains operating, close to 2,800 passengers can now travel daily between the two capital cities. This reflects how popular and important this service has become,” he said. The increased capacity is expected to significantly ease travel pressure, especially during peak tourist and pilgrimage seasons.

Seamless Connectivity Driving Economic Transformation: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described the Vande Bharat expansion as a “landmark achievement” and emphasized its role as a lifeline for Jammu & Kashmir’s economy. He noted that improved rail connectivity is enabling seamless movement of passengers and goods, strengthening trade and reducing costs. Essential commodities such as cement are now reaching the Valley at significantly lower prices, with rates dropping below ₹50 per bag due to efficient freight operations.

“This is not just a train service-it is an economic corridor that connects markets, reduces costs, and creates opportunities,” Vaishnaw said.

Freight Movement|A Game-Changer For Trade: One of the most transformative impacts of the rail link is in freight movement. The railway network is now facilitating the efficient transport of goods into and out of the Valley. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah pointed out the visible changes in logistics, noting that cement, food supplies, and even vehicles are now being transported directly to Srinagar. “I saw cars being transported directly to Srinagar, which is a major logistical shift,” he said. Outbound logistics have also improved significantly. Agricultural and horticultural produce, including apples, cherries, milk, and dairy products, are now reaching markets across the country more efficiently. Union Minister Vaishnaw informed that over 2 crore kilograms of apples have already been transported from Kashmir to Delhi through the railway network. This has not only reduced transit time but also minimized losses for farmers, ensuring better returns.

Boost To Farmers, Local Industries: The improved rail connectivity is expected to have a lasting impact on Jammu & Kashmir’s rural economy. Farmers and producers now have access to faster and more reliable transport, enabling them to tap into national markets. Omar Abdullah emphasized that this will strengthen local industries and create new opportunities for growth. “Fruits, milk and dairy products are now reaching markets outside J&K through the railway network, which will benefit farmers and producers,” he said. The ease of transporting perishable goods such as cherries and dairy products is particularly significant, as it opens up new avenues for value addition and export.

Tourism, Pilgrimage Get A Major Boost: The extended Vande Bharat service is also expected to significantly boost tourism and pilgrimage in the region. With faster, more comfortable travel options, destinations across Jammu & Kashmir are becoming more accessible. The introduction of regional cuisines onboard, including Dogri and Kashmiri dishes, adds a unique cultural touch to the journey, enhancing the overall travel experience. Union Minister Jitendra Singh noted that improved connectivity would lead to a surge in tourist inflow and facilitate smoother travel for pilgrims visiting key religious sites. Special arrangements are also being planned for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, with a focus on ensuring safety and convenience for pilgrims.

Built For Himalayas, Technology And Innovation: Operating in the challenging terrain of Jammu & Kashmir requires advanced technology, and the Vande Bharat trains deployed in the region are specially designed for such conditions. Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that these trains can operate in temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius and are equipped with advanced systems suited for high-altitude and tunnel-heavy routes. This technological capability ensures reliability and safety, even in extreme weather conditions, making the service dependable throughout the year.

Expanding The Rail Network|Future Projects: Looking ahead, the Railway Minister outlined several key projects aimed at further strengthening connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir. Work is underway to double the railway line between Qazigund and Baramulla, which will enhance capacity and improve operational efficiency. Additional projects, including the Poonch–Rajouri rail link and the Uri–Baramulla extension, are currently in the planning and DPR stages. These initiatives aim to extend rail connectivity to more regions, integrating remote areas into the national network and unlocking new economic opportunities.

Infrastructure Push| Stations, Systems: The transformation of the rail network is being complemented by significant infrastructure upgrades. Jammu Tawi Railway Station is undergoing rapid redevelopment, with plans for additional platforms and modern passenger amenities. The Railways is also introducing automatic signalling systems and constructing additional crossing stations to ensure smooth train operations. Several railway stations across the Union Territory are being upgraded to improve passenger experience. These developments are part of a broader effort to modernize railway infrastructure and support the growing demand for rail services.

Engineering Marvels Turn Functional: During his visit, Ashwini Vaishnaw travelled onboard the Vande Bharat Express to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station and inspected key infrastructure projects on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). He reviewed progress on iconic structures such as the Chenab Bridge and the Anji Khad Bridge-engineering marvels that have played a crucial role in making seamless rail connectivity a reality. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recalled the inauguration of these projects, noting that they have now translated into a reliable and widely used transport system.

Call For Inland Dry Port To Boost Exports: While acknowledging the progress made, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also highlighted the need for further infrastructure to support economic growth. He urged the Centre to establish an inland dry port in Jammu & Kashmir to streamline export processes. “There is a need for a dry port so that customs clearance can happen within J&K instead of other cities. This will benefit trade and business and support economic growth,” he said. The Chief Minister noted that this demand has been pending for years and appealed to Union Ministers and Members of Parliament to take up the matter.

Strategic Importance, National Integration: The Jammu–Srinagar rail link is not only an economic asset but also a strategic one. It enhances the movement of goods, passengers, and security personnel, strengthening integration with the rest of the country. Vaishnaw emphasized that passengers from across India can now access Jammu & Kashmir by rail with ease, requiring just a single interchange at Jammu. With services running twice daily, the region is now more connected than ever before. This connectivity is expected to improve the ease of doing business, attract investment, and support long-term development.

“The direct Jammu–Srinagar rail link as a long-awaited milestone, noting that the 20-coach expansion has sharply increased capacity and improved movement of passengers and goods, while urged the Centre to set up an inland dry port to further boost trade and exports,” Chief Minister Omar Abdullah

A New Chapter For Jammu & Kashmir: The extension of the Vande Bharat Express to a 20-coach configuration marks a defining moment in Jammu & Kashmir’s development journey. It represents the convergence of infrastructure, technology, and policy aimed at transforming the region’s connectivity landscape. From easing travel and boosting tourism to enhancing trade and supporting farmers, the impact of this initiative is far-reaching. As Omar Abdullah aptly said, the direct rail link fulfills a long-standing aspiration of the people. “For years, we waited for a train journey between Jammu and Srinagar. Today, that dream has been realised. Jammu and Kashmir is now more connected than ever before,” he said. With continued investment and expansion, the railways are set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Jammu & Kashmir-connecting not just destinations, but opportunities, aspirations, and growth.

Kashmir Horizon View: The expansion of the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express into a 20-coach service marks a decisive step forward, but the long-term success of this transformation will depend on how effectively the momentum is sustained.  The immediate priority for Indian Railways and the Jammu & Kashmir administration will be to ensure operational stability, especially given the challenging Himalayan terrain, extreme weather conditions, and heavy tunnel infrastructure.  Regular maintenance, real-time monitoring systems, and investment in advanced signalling and safety mechanisms will be essential to ensure reliability and passenger confidence. Equally important is the need to maximise the economic potential of this connectivity. The rail link must evolve into a fully integrated logistics corridor, enabling seamless movement of goods from farms and industries in Jammu & Kashmir to national markets.  Establishing cold chain infrastructure, warehousing facilities, and efficient last-mile transport networks will be critical for supporting the transportation of perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The proposed inland dry port, as highlighted by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, could be a game-changing intervention, allowing exporters to complete customs procedures within the region and significantly reducing logistical costs. Tourism is another sector that stands to gain immensely. With faster and more comfortable rail travel, tourist inflow is expected to increase substantially. This calls for parallel investments in hospitality infrastructure, local transport services, and destination management to ensure that the region can handle higher visitor volumes without compromising sustainability. Special focus should also be given to pilgrimage tourism, particularly during peak seasons like the Amarnath Yatra, where coordinated planning between railways, administration, and security agencies will be crucial. From a strategic standpoint, the expansion of rail connectivity to areas such as Poonch, Rajouri, and Uri should be expedited. These projects will not only enhance regional integration but also open up new economic zones.  At the same time, capacity augmentation through line doubling, additional trains, and freight-specific corridors will be necessary to meet growing demand. Ultimately, the way forward lies in leveraging this connectivity as a catalyst for holistic development-linking infrastructure with industry, agriculture, tourism, and trade. If implemented with foresight and coordination, the Jammu–Srinagar rail corridor can emerge as one of the most transformative infrastructure projects in the region’s history. The impact is already visible. Passenger mobility has improved dramatically, freight movement has become more efficient, and local industries-especially horticulture and dairy-are gaining better access to national markets. Reduced transportation costs are benefiting both consumers and businesses, while the tourism sector is poised for significant growth. As emphasized by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, this is not just a connectivity project, it is a foundation for growth, integration, and opportunity. If nurtured effectively, it could stand as a defining milestone in the region’s journey towards prosperity.
