Srinagar: IGP Kashmir and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir co-chaired a joint meeting to assess the implementation and progress of the NashaMukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan at PCR Kashmir.
The 100-day “NashaMukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan” was launched by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, UT of J&K, as a time-bound and outcome-oriented initiative to intensify the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking across the Union Territory, directing all concerned departments and enforcement agencies to adopt a zero-tolerance approach against drug peddling.
The meeting was attended by all range DIsG of Kashmir, all DCs of Kashmir Zone, all district SSsP of Kashmir Zone, JDP ZPHQ and other senior officers.
At the outset of the meeting, the District SSPs briefed the chair on the ongoing operations against drug networks and peddlers. They apprised that sustained enforcement drives under the NDPS Act have led to the arrest of more than 296 drug peddlers, registration of over 281 cases, and identification of key hotspots.
The officers also briefed the chair that about 460 awareness programmes have been organized to sensitize the general public, especially students, about the ill effects of drug abuse.
They further informed the senior officers that illegal cultivation of contraband on about 15 kanals of land was destroyed and several chemist shops found violating drug regulations were sealed as part of sustained eradication drives, besides properties linked to drug trafficking were identified and attached under relevant provisions of law.
Deputy Commissioners apprised the chair about the measures being taken under the 100-day “NashaMukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan” and the progress achieved at the district level. They highlighted intensified awareness activities in educational institutions, panchayats, and vulnerable areas, along with strengthened coordination with line departments.
IGP Kashmir emphasized the need for sustained and coordinated efforts among law enforcement agencies to dismantle drug networks and curb the menace of substance abuse. V.K Birdi stressed strict action against offenders, with a focus on dismantling drug trafficking networks through sustained enforcement, strengthening intelligence-led operations, and ensuring effective prosecution to secure higher conviction rates.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir also underscored the importance of a multi-sectoral approach involving civil administration, health departments, education institutions, and civil society organizations. He called for strengthening rehabilitation mechanisms and enhancing awareness at the grassroots level.
IGP Kashmir and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir directed all stakeholders to intensify efforts, ensure better coordination, and adopt innovative strategies to make the NashaMukt Abhiyan more impactful.
The meeting concluded with a firm resolve to make Jammu & Kashmir a drug-free society through sustained enforcement, coordinated efforts, and strengthened prevention and rehabilitation measures.
