Reaffirms judiciary’s firm support to youth in fight against substance abuse

Shopian | April, 28: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Shopian, in collaboration with the District Administration Shopian, Monday organised a Mega Awareness Camp under the ongoing “100 Days NashaMukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan” at Government Degree College (GDC), Shopian.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, legal professionals, police officials, and officers of the district administration, reflecting a collective commitment to eradicate drug abuse from society.

Mohammad Ahmad Chowdhary, Principal District & Sessions Judge Shopian, who attended the programme as Chief Guest, lauded the efforts of DLSA and the District Administration in organising the awareness campaign. He urged students to act as ambassadors of the anti-drug movement and called upon teachers and parents to remain vigilant.

He further affirmed that the judiciary stands firmly with the youth in the fight against substance abuse and will continue to support initiatives aimed at building a drug-free society.

ADDC Shopian, Dr. Nasir Ahmad Lone, while speaking on the occasion expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, speakers, performers, and participants for making the event successful. He urged all stakeholders to actively support the ongoing campaign against drug abuse.

Chairman DLSA Shopian, Mahmood Ahmad, elaborated on the legal framework to tackle drug abuse and reiterated the Authority’s commitment to providing free legal aid to victims and their families.

Rafie Ahmad Ganie, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel (LADC) Shopian, and Mudasir Farooq, Secretary DLSA Shopian, spoke about rehabilitation measures, legal aid services, and support mechanisms available for individuals affected by substance abuse.

District Information Officer (DIO) Shopian, Showkat Hussain Ganie, in his address underscored the need for collective societal efforts to curb the growing menace of substance abuse. He highlighted that addiction often begins at an early stage and requires timely intervention and awareness.

A cultural segment organised by DIPR Shopian, featuring a folk performance and poetry recitation, captivated the audience and effectively conveyed the anti-drug message among the youth.

Students also presented a powerful skit portraying the devastating effects of drug abuse on families, followed by another awareness performance by a team from DIPR Shopian, reinforcing the campaign’s core message.

In a strong show of unity, all participants took a solemn pledge to remain drug-free and to spread awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse within their communities.

During the technical session, Prof. Muneer Azad and Dr.Aadil, Medical Officer at ATF, delivered insightful lectures on the medical, psychological, and social consequences of drug addiction, sensitising the participants on its far-reaching impact.

Among others, the event was attended by Principal GDC Shopian Prof. Tariq Hussain Mir, General Manager DIC Shurjil Naik, ASP Rameez Rashid, Assistant Director Labour Dr. Nida Yousuf, DYSSO Shopian Sunil Kumar, officers from various departments including KPDCL, FCS&CA, TSWO Shopian, LADCs of DLSA, faculty members, and other stakeholders.
