DC Srinagar highlights importance of skill development, holistic youth empowerment

District Admin Srinagar’s Rolling Trophy event for 1st Inter-College Debate Competition organised under Youth Engagement, Empowerment Prog

 

Srinagar : Srinagar District Administration on Saturday organised the District Administration Srinagar’s 1st Inter-College Debate Competition–2026 under the Youth Engagement and Empowerment Programme here at the Auditorium of Amar Singh College.

The programme was presided over by Deputy Commissioner(DC) Srinagar, AkshayLabroo.

The event was attended by Chief Planning Officer Srinagar, Fayaz Ahmad Dar, Nodal Principal, Kashmir Division Colleges, Seema Naaz, Principal, Amar Singh College, Ajaz Ahmad Hakak, besides, enthusiastic participants from students and faculty members of various City Colleges, fostering intellectual and critical discourse among students.

In his address Deputy Commissioner delivered an address outlining a 12-month Youth Empowerment Plan focused on enhancing academic excellence, critical thinking, and youth engagement in sports. He stressed the importance of structured academic and extracurricular programs to equip young individuals for future challenges. A significant aspect of this initiative is the Rolling Trophy Debate Competition, which aims to promote intellectual discourse among students and reflects the administration’s commitment to youth development. The Deputy Commissioner noted that such initiatives play a crucial role in protecting youth from social issues like drug abuse, redirecting their energies towards positive societal contributions. The debate’s theme, “Skill development and not the delivery of formal degrees should be the priority of the government,” sparked engaging discussions among students from various colleges, who presented well-reasoned arguments on both sides of the motion. At the event’s conclusion, the Deputy Commissioner recognized the winners for their exceptional performances. The Principal of Amar Singh College emphasized the importance of academic platforms in developing analytical thinking and public speaking skills, aligning education with current societal needs, particularly regarding employability and skill enhancement. The Nodal Principal of Colleges, Kashmir Division, expressed gratitude to the District Administration Srinagar, participating institutions, judges, faculty, and students for their contributions to the event’s success. The competition was judged by a panel of experts, ensuring fairness and high academic standards. Hadiya Binti Rouf from GCW Nawakadal Srinagar won the First Prize, followed by Vadiah Aqeel from Amar Singh College and Maryam from GDCW Zakura Srinagar, who secured the Second and Third Prizes, respectively. The debate session was effectively moderated by Prof. Basharat Shameem, who maintained a balanced and engaging environment. The event was organized by the Debates and Seminars Committee of Amar Singh College, led by Dr. Shabnam Ara and co-headed by Prof. Ishaq Ahmad Wani, whose efforts contributed to the event’s seamless execution.
