Ganderbal, April 25: A massive avalanche struck Shaitani Nallah in the Drass area of Kargil district on Saturday, trapping several vehicles and disrupting traffic along the strategic Sonamarg–Kargil route.
Officials said the avalanche occurred around 4 p.m. and affected at least seven goods vehicles, including two tankers, which were moving towards Kargil from Sonamarg.
Rescue teams comprising personnel from the civil administration and police rushed to the spot and launched operations to assist those affected.
While no fatalities were reported, some drivers sustained minor injuries and were shifted to the Sub-District Hospital in Drass for treatment.
The extent of damage to vehicles and road connectivity was being assessed, officials said, adding that efforts were underway to restore normal movement along the route.
The incident comes weeks after a fatal avalanche near Kani Pathri in the Zojila axis on March 27, which had left seven people, including a child, dead, raising concerns over safety along the high-altitude corridor.
