Police intensify crackdown on Illegal Poppy Cultivation in Anantnag; Multiple cases registered

Anantnag, 23 April: Continuing its firm action against the menace of narcotic cultivation, Anantnag Police has destroyed illegal poppy crops at multiple locations across the district and registered cases under relevant provisions of law.

A Spokesperson said that Police Station Utrasoo, along with the Executive Magistrate and officials from the Agriculture Department, destroyed illegally cultivated poppy on land belonging to Mohd Yousuf Malik S/o Gh Ahmad Malik R/o Shergund in village Shergund. In this regard, Case FIR No. 41/2026 under Section 8/18 NDPS Act has been registered and investigation is in progress.

Similarly, a police party from Police Post Dialgam, during routine patrolling in the Wanihama area, detected illegal poppy cultivation spread over approximately 10 marlas of land belonging to Mohd Rajab S/o Mohd Shaban and Gull Mohd Sheikh S/o Gh Nabi Sheikh, both residents of Wanihama. The crop was destroyed on the spot in the presence of the Executive Magistrate and Agriculture Department officials. Accordingly, FIR No. 113/2026 under Section 8/18 NDPS Act has been registered and investigation has been taken up.

In another operation, Police Station Kokernag, during patrolling in the Bohripora Sagam area, identified illicit poppy cultivation over approximately 13 marlas of land belonging to five individuals. The crop was destroyed on the spot in the presence of the Executive Magistrate, Agriculture Department officials, Numberdar, and Chowkidar of the area. In this connection, FIR No. 27/2026 under Section 8/18 NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Kokernag and investigation is underway.

Anantnag Police reiterates its commitment to eradicating illegal narcotic cultivation and appeals to the public to cooperate in this collective effort to build a drug-free society.
