Dir, Registrar highlight impact; eco-friendly system set to transform roads

Srinagar|  The National Institute of Technology Srinagar has received a patent from the Government of India for an innovative material system titled “Zinc-Coordinated Porphyrin-Integrated Geocomposite Systems for Sustainable Pavement Engineering.”

The achievement is attributed to a research team led by Dr. Vivek and Dr. Ravi Kumar, alongside collaborators including PhD scholar Dr. Waseem Arif and other team members. This patented technology represents a significant advancement in eco-friendly road construction, introducing a new class of functional geo-composite materials that integrate zinc-coordinated porphyrin structures. The system is designed to enhance the mechanical strength and environmental performance of road infrastructure, particularly in challenging climates like those in Jammu and Kashmir. The material demonstrates improved resistance to rutting and fatigue cracking, which are common causes of pavement failure. By modifying the internal structure of pavement layers at both molecular and composite levels, the innovation allows for better load distribution, increased durability, and an extended service life for roads. The Director of NIT Srinagar, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, praised the research team’s efforts, highlighting the patent as a reflection of the institute’s commitment to impactful research and innovation. Prof. Atikur Rehman, the institute’s Registrar, described the development as a landmark achievement that underscores the dedication and interdisciplinary collaboration of the researchers. Dean Research and Consultancy, Prof. Roohie Naaz Mir, noted the broader implications of the innovation, emphasizing its potential application in modern pavement engineering.
