Jammu: Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo Thursday convened a meeting to assess the implementation status of the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme (PMIS) in Jammu and Kashmir and outlined a comprehensive strategy to enhance its outreach and impact across the Union Territory.
Those who attended this meeting includes Commissioner Secretary, School Education Department; Secretary, Employment and Skill Development Departments; MD, Skill Development Mission along with other concerned officers. Director, PMIS in Ministry of Corporate Affairs, GoI attended the meeting through video link.
Addressing the meeting Chief Secretary emphasized the significance of the PMIS scheme in enhancing youth employability through structured internships in reputable companies. Launched under the Union Budget 2024–25, the scheme offers internships lasting 6 to 9 months, with a monthly stipend of ₹9,000 and a one-time grant of ₹6,000, providing young individuals with essential industry exposure. Progress reports indicate a positive response in Jammu and Kashmir, with over 4,400 youth registered on the portal and more than 2,800 profiles completed. However, there are currently only 68 internship opportunities available in the region, highlighting a disparity between registrations and available positions. The Chief Secretary urged for efforts to bridge this gap and stressed the importance of increased industry engagement, calling for the Ministry’s active involvement to enhance internship availability. To address the limited presence of large corporate entities in the Union Territory, the Chief Secretary called for a significant increase in internship opportunities, aiming for at least 1,000 positions in the near future. He directed that PMIS registration be integrated with institutional mechanisms such as ITIs, polytechnics, and colleges to maximize outreach to eligible youth. Additionally, he highlighted the role of District Employment & Counselling Centres, Common Service Centres, and placement cells in facilitating registrations. The Secretary of SDD, Kumar Rajeev Ranjan, presented a 100-day roadmap focused on scaling up registrations and improving outcomes, targeting 20,000 registrations in the initial phase. This structured approach includes campus drives, help desks, mass awareness campaigns, and mobile registration units in remote areas. The strategy will leverage the extensive youth database and grassroots network of Mission YUVA, which has already identified over 4.73 lakh willing-to-work youth, with plans to mobilize around 2,000 YUVA Doots for door-to-door awareness and registration efforts. The Chief Secretary underscored the transformative potential of the PMIS scheme in bridging the gap between education and employment, preparing the youth of Jammu and Kashmir for the demands of the modern job market. He called for effective monitoring, regular reviews, and real-time tracking of progress through digital platforms, ensuring that any bottlenecks are promptly addressed for timely resolution.
