PM Modi, President Trump speak on phone, review bilateral ties, stress security of Strait of Hormuz

New Delhi, Apr 14 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said he had a telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders reviewed the progress in India–US relations and discussed key regional and global issues, including the situation in West Asia. ‎

In a post on X, Modi described the exchange as a discussion with a “friend,” noting that both sides assessed the substantial progress achieved in bilateral cooperation across sectors.

“We reviewed the substantial progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation in various sectors. We are committed to further strengthening our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership in all areas,” he said. ‎

The conversation comes amid continued efforts by both countries to deepen engagement in areas such as defence, trade, technology, and energy, with India and the United States increasingly positioning their partnership as a key pillar of stability in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

Over the past decade, ties between New Delhi and Washington have expanded significantly, with multiple high-level engagements and strategic frameworks enhancing cooperation. ‎

A key focus of the discussion was the evolving situation in West Asia, where ongoing tensions have raised concerns over regional stability and global energy security.

Modi said both leaders emphasised the importance of ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and secure, underlining its critical role in global oil supply chains. ‎

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital maritime chokepoints, handles a significant portion of global crude oil shipments, making its stability crucial not only for countries in the region but also for major energy importers like India.

Any disruption in this corridor has the potential to impact global markets and fuel prices. ‎

While details of the call were limited, diplomatic observers see the exchange as part of ongoing coordination between the two leaders on strategic and security issues, particularly at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.

The emphasis on safeguarding maritime routes reflects shared concerns over ensuring uninterrupted trade and energy flows. ‎The latest interaction underscores the continued importance both nations attach to their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, with leaders on both sides reiterating their commitment to expanding cooperation and addressing emerging global challenges through dialogue and coordination.
