KMCH Sempora organizes walkathon on World Health Day

Srinagar : Kashmir Medical College and Hospital (KMCH), Sempora, in collaboration with the WHO J&K Unit on Monday organized World Health Day under the theme “Together for Health, Stand with Science,” led by the Department of Community Medicine.

The day-long programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members and staff. It began with a poster presentation, live sand art display on World Health Day and a session by the Community Medicine focusing on community health, followed by a walkathon.

Managing Director KMC, Tausif Ahmad, was the Chief Guest on the occasion, while Executive Director Insha Qazi was the Guest of Honour. Principal/Dean KMCH, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Khan; Medical Superintendent Prof. Dr. Syed Mubasir; HoD Community Medicine and Chairperson Organizing Committee Prof. (Dr) Shahnaz Nabi; Deputy Medical Superintendent Prof. Dr. H. Viqar;Heads of Departments, and senior faculty members, including Prof. Rubi Reshi, Prof. Sheikh Sajad, Prof. Saheel Majid and others, were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Principal/Dean KMCH, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Khan, said that World Health Day aims to promote public health awareness and counter the spread of misinformation in society.

He emphasized that health is a state of complete physical and mental well-being, not merely the absence of disease. Stressing collective responsibility, he called for sustained efforts to raise awareness, adopt healthy lifestyles, and promote overall well-being.

Managing Director KMC, Tausif Ahmad, congratulated the Department of Community Medicine for successfully organizing the programme. He said that health is not confined to a single day but is an everyday commitment that must be nurtured consistently. “In our busy lives, we often neglect our health, forgetting that lost time never returns,” he remarked, urging people to prioritize both physical and mental well-being.

Highlighting the importance of Community Medicine, he said the department plays a key role in promoting preventive healthcare and spreading awareness at the grassroots level. He stressed that collective efforts and mutual support are essential to building a healthier society and that such programmes should be conducted regularly.

He further noted that KMC has been actively organizing continuous medical education (CME) sessions and various health initiatives to enhance knowledge and service delivery.

He added that KMC is working with a clear vision and is hopeful of receiving permission from the National Medical Commission (NMC) soon, paving the way for establishing it as a premier healthcare and academic institution.

Executive Director Insha Qazi said that such initiatives play a vital role in strengthening preventive healthcare and promoting awareness among the community.

She emphasized that collective participation reflects a shared commitment towards healthier living and appreciated the efforts of the organizing team. She reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to conducting impactful programmes for public health and well-being.

Earlier, HoD Community Medicine, Prof. Shahnaz Nazir, spoke about the significance of World Health Day, highlighting that each year it is observed with a specific theme to raise awareness. She urged people to adopt daily exercise and a balanced diet to combat NCDs.

Faculty members from Community Medicine Department presented scientific sessions on World Health Day. Dr Muzamil Nazir Associate Professor, Dr Sheikh Mohd Saleem Associate Professor, Dr Ashiq Rashid, Dr Muzaffar Assistant Professor spoke about myths and misconceptions regarding science.

Dr. Saima Nazir of the Community Medicine Department conducted the proceedings, while the vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Sheikh Saleem of the same department.

The programme concluded with a unique marathon in which the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, Principal/Dean, dignitaries, Heads of Departments (HoDs), faculty members, and staff participated and took a pledge on World Health Day.
