Ganderbal : Central University of Kashmir’s (CUKashmir) OBC, SC/ST/PwD cell in collaboration  with the Dean, Students Welfare Monday organised a special lecture on “B. R. Ambedkar and the Moral Foundations of Indian Democracy: Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity as Social Ethics” as part of the ongoing celebration of the 135th Birth Anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar at the varsity’s Tulmulla campus.

In his keynote address, Prof. Anil Kumar emphasized the concept of “associated living” as articulated by Dr. Ambedkar, asserting that democracy is fundamentally a dialogue that requires listening, even amidst disagreement. He argued that democracy should be anchored in social justice, liberty, and dignity, rather than solely in legal frameworks. Prof. Kumar highlighted the detrimental impact of caste and social inequality on the survival of true democracy, insisting that liberty must encompass lived experiences in everyday environments, including homes and public spaces. Chief Guest Prof. Shahid Rasool underscored the ongoing significance of Ambedkar’s ideas in modern India, advocating for critical engagement with thinkers, as they are not infallible. He acknowledged the strength of India’s Constitution, crafted by Dr. Ambedkar and others, as a foundation for the nation’s resilience post-colonization. Prof. Rasool called for a collective commitment to justice and equality, urging participants to confront injustice across all societal levels, regardless of caste, color, race, or religion, and to embody moral courage and ethical responsibility. During the event, participants took an oath under the “Nash Mukt J&K Abhiyan” initiative, pledging to combat drug abuse and promote a healthier society. A video was presented to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of collective action. Dr. Jehirul Islam, Dean of Students Welfare, praised the involvement of students and faculty, reaffirming the university’s dedication to inclusive and democratic values. The session was moderated by Dr. John Babu Koyye, who reflected on the youth’s role in fostering ethical citizenship and social justice, emphasizing that meaningful change requires ongoing engagement. The program concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Altaf Hussain and the distribution of prizes and certificates to participants who excelled in various competitions, including essay writing, elocution, and cultural performances, held between April 9 and 10.
