Baramulla : Police on Friday said that it has foiled a major land fraud attempt at Wussan Kunzer by apprehending a group of fraudsters who were posing as land brokers and government officials to deceive an unsuspecting buyer.

According to a police statement issued here on Friday  the accused fabricated false ownership documents of a piece of land and presented one of their associates as the legitimate owner. To lend credibility to the scam, one accused impersonated a Patwari while others posed as revenue officials. However, timely verification by police exposed the conspiracy.

The complainant, Abdul Ahad Malik of Panzi Nara Shalteng, had already been duped of a substantial amount before police intervention.

Police identified the accused as Gh Mohammad Wani (impersonating as Patwari), Masood Ahmad Wani, Md Yousuf Wani, Md Abdullah Mir, Bilal Parray, Fayaz Ahmad Khanday, and Riyaz Ahmad Mir.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the complainant had paid ₹4 lakh in cash and ₹10,000 through bank transfer and was being pressured to arrange an additional ₹20 lakh. The accused were intercepted at a crucial stage, preventing further loss.

Police recovered forged revenue documents related to 13.5 kanals of land at WussanBangil under Khasra Nos. 271, 272, 273, and 274.

A case under FIR No. 42/2026 has been registered at Police Station Kunzer, and further investigation is underway. In its statement Police also appealed people to verify land documents and identities through proper government channels before entering into property transactions.
