G’bal : The Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) hosted an online lecture titled “The Women’s Reservation Bill: Constitutional Vision for Gender Equity & Democratic Representation in India,” presented by Smt. Rekha Sharma, a Member of Parliament and former Chairperson of the National Commission for Women.

In her address, Sharma characterized the Women’s Reservation Bill (WRB) as a significant advancement towards achieving equitable political participation for women in India. She emphasized that the Bill aims to rectify historical imbalances in political representation and to facilitate women’s active involvement in governance. Despite advancements in various sectors, Smt. Sharma pointed out the persistent underrepresentation of women in legislative bodies. She described the WRB as a corrective mechanism that enhances democracy by ensuring it is more inclusive and representative of all societal segments, particularly women, who make up nearly half of the population. She discussed the socio-cultural barriers, lack of institutional support, and limited resources that hinder women’s political engagement and sustainability in leadership roles. Smt. Sharma also highlighted the positive implications of increased female representation in legislative bodies, noting that it often leads to more inclusive policymaking in critical areas such as health, education, and social welfare. She asserted that women leaders contribute unique perspectives that enrich the democratic process and foster balanced governance. Furthermore, she stressed the importance of education and awareness in empowering women for leadership roles, advocating for a holistic approach that combines political, social, and economic empowerment. In her concluding remarks, Smt. Sharma encouraged students and young scholars to engage actively in the democratic process and contribute to nation-building. The session included a Q&A segment where participants discussed the implementation of the Naari Shakthi VandanAdhiniyam. The program was chaired by Prof. Naseema Chandakalayam, who highlighted her advocacy for women’s rights, and Dr. Himabindu, the program coordinator, commended the initiative of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ravinder Nath, for facilitating this important dialogue on gender equity and constitutional values.
