Srinagar : Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board Chairperson Darakshan Andrabi on Monday welcomed the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act, calling it a “dream come true” for women across the country.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a BJP foundation day event, Andrabi said the move would mark a significant step towards empowering women by ensuring their greater participation in lawmaking bodies.
“It is an inspiring step and a dream come true for women to become partners in framing laws,” she said, congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the initiative.
Andrabi said the progress achieved in recent years reflects a focused effort to enhance women’s representation in governance. She added that the move would lead to a substantial increase in the number of women lawmakers in Parliament and state assemblies.
Commenting on the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, Andrabi said the BJP has strengthened its presence in the Union Territory and is expected to grow further in the coming years. She credited the leadership of the Prime Minister for developmental initiatives and progress in the region.
The remarks come amid indications that the government is moving towards implementing the law, enacted in 2023, which provides 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. The Centre is expected to take up key legislative measures, including increasing the strength of the Lok Sabha, to facilitate its rollout.
