Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 132nd edition of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, lauded India’s recent cricketing successes and spotlighted the growing sports culture in Jammu and Kashmir.  Addressing the nation, he described the past month as a period of immense excitement and national pride for cricket enthusiasts, following India’s historic victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The win, he noted, was not merely a sporting achievement but a unifying moment for citizens across the country, reflecting the spirit, skill, and resilience of Indian athletes on the global stage.

Jammu & Kashmir’s Historic Ranji Trophy Victory: The Prime Minister drew special attention to domestic cricket, celebrating the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team’s maiden Ranji Trophy title after nearly seven decades. This landmark victory, he emphasized, is the outcome of years of dedication, hard work, and perseverance by the players, coaches, and support staff.  Highlighting the leadership of team captain Paras Dogra, PM Modi also praised young bowler Aaqib Nabi for his outstanding performance, taking 60 wickets during the tournament and playing a pivotal role in the team’s success. The victory, according to the Prime Minister, has created a wave of enthusiasm among players, coaches, and the people of Jammu and Kashmir, serving as a source of inspiration for the youth in the region.

Emerging Sports Hub In Jammu & Kashmir: PM Modi underscored that Jammu and Kashmir’s sporting achievements extend beyond cricket. He observed that the region is emerging as a hub for major sporting events, with initiatives like the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg gaining prominence and attracting national attention. Such events, he noted, have not only increased participation in winter sports but have also showcased the state’s potential to host international-level competitions.  He further mentioned the popularity of football, particularly among local youth, highlighting that Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a broadening of its sports culture across multiple disciplines.

Inspiring Youth, Community Engagement: PM Modi noted that these sporting achievements are more than individual or team victories; they represent the spirit of the region, reflecting resilience, discipline, and a willingness to strive for excellence despite challenges.  The Prime Minister highlighted that encouraging youth participation in sports is essential for nurturing talent, improving health and fitness, and fostering a sense of teamwork and national pride.  He emphasized that the triumph of Jammu and Kashmir’s athletes, in cricket as well as other sports, would inspire more young people to take up sports and contribute to the creation of a vibrant sporting ecosystem in the region.

Strengthening Infra, Training: Highlighting the role of government initiatives, PM Modi drew attention to efforts aimed at strengthening sports infrastructure, training programs, and coaching facilities in Jammu and Kashmir.  These measures, he said, are designed to provide aspiring athletes with opportunities to develop their skills, gain national recognition, and compete at higher levels.  Prime Minister underlined that access to modern infrastructure and professional guidance is crucial for transforming raw talent into elite performance, enabling Jammu and Kashmir to emerge as a consistent contributor to India’s sporting successes.

Sports, A Catalyst For Social Values: Prime Minister also spoke about the broader significance of sports in shaping society, noting that a strong sports culture encourages values such as discipline, perseverance, and fair play. In his address, PM Modi highlighted how athletes from Jammu and Kashmir are not only excelling in competitions but also serving as role models, inspiring younger generations to embrace sports and strive for excellence in multiple areas of life. The Prime Minister pointed out that these achievements foster regional pride, strengthen community engagement, and contribute to building a more cohesive and dynamic society.

Nurturing Talent, Grassroots Development: The Prime Minister’s focus extended to the impact of these achievements on youth aspirations. He stated that the recognition of Jammu and Kashmir players in cricket and other sports has created a sense of possibility and motivation for young athletes, demonstrating that with dedication and hard work, regional talent can achieve national and international success. PM Modi emphasized that nurturing such aspirations is vital for the long-term development of sports in the region, and called on local communities, educational institutions, and sports organizations to support youth engagement through coaching, mentorship, and structured training programs.

Popularity of Winter Sports, Adventure Activities: In addition to traditional sports like cricket and football, PM Modi highlighted the growing interest in winter sports and adventure activities, which are gaining popularity in the region.  He noted that events like the Khelo India Winter Games not only provide competitive platforms but also promote tourism, local employment, and economic development, creating a holistic impact on Jammu and Kashmir’s society. The Prime Minister reiterated that such initiatives are part of a larger vision to integrate sports into community life, ensuring that physical activity, competition, and national pride go hand in hand.

Symbolism, Regional Pride: PM Modi also reflected on the symbolic significance of these victories. He suggested that sporting achievements in Jammu and Kashmir are representative of the state’s broader potential for excellence across multiple spheres. They signal that sustained effort, investment in infrastructure, and encouragement of talent can yield results that resonate nationally, instilling confidence among citizens and attracting attention to the region’s capabilities.  He encouraged continued focus on grassroots development, stating that nurturing local talent from an early age is key to sustaining long-term growth and producing champions who can shine on national and international stages.

Coordinated Efforts For Holistic Development: The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of collaboration between government bodies, sports federations, educational institutions, and local communities in fostering a thriving sports ecosystem.  He emphasized that coordinated efforts are necessary to ensure that athletes receive comprehensive support, including physical training, nutrition, psychological guidance, and competitive exposure. PM Modi also underlined the need for timely recognition and reward for outstanding performances, noting that such measures motivate athletes and reinforce a culture of excellence.

Optimism For The Future: While celebrating the victories in cricket and winter sports, PM Modi expressed optimism about the future of sports in Jammu and Kashmir.  He emphasized that these successes are just the beginning, and that consistent investment, systematic planning, and community support will help the region emerge as a national hub for sports.  The Prime Minister called on youth across Jammu and Kashmir to actively participate in sporting activities, explore their potential, and strive to achieve excellence in diverse disciplines, thus contributing to the nation’s growing stature in global sports.
