- Vaishnaw flags record drop in accidents, freight gains
- Underpasses preferred over foot overbridges
- Focus on crowd management, station upgrades
New Delhi : Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday said improving travel experience for the poor and middle class remains the top priority of Indian Railways, while stressing cleanliness and better infrastructure at stations.
Chairing a nationwide review meeting, the Minister highlighted a “historic reduction” in rail accidents and record freight loading, calling it a major boost to the Railways’ public image.
He directed officials to ensure optimal use of funds allocated for modernisation, with special emphasis on station cleanliness, passenger amenities and crowd management during peak travel periods.
In a key decision, the Railways will prioritise construction of underpasses over foot overbridges wherever feasible, citing better usability for pedestrians and vehicles.
The Minister also called for expediting land acquisition for pending projects and urged a “humane approach” in dealing with people living near railway tracks.
Officials were asked to maintain punctuality levels and continue efforts to improve safety and passenger convenience across the network.
