Srinagar : The Department of Linguistics, University of Kashmir (KU), successfully concluded a two-day workshop on ‘Use of Linguistics Software and Tools’ at the Main Campus.
The workshop focused on familiarizing participants with contemporary linguistic software, aiming to enhance their practical skills in data analysis, phonetic research, and language documentation amidst the increasing reliance on artificial intelligence. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan emphasized the importance of integrating digital tools into language studies to adapt to evolving academic practices, which aids students and scholars in refining their research skills and engaging with new methodologies in linguistics. Prof. Majid Zaman, Controller of Examinations, highlighted the necessity of merging technology with linguistic research in today’s fast-paced academic environment, asserting that such workshops empower participants to utilize advanced tools, thereby improving the quality and scope of their research. Prof. Nazir Ahmad Dhar, former Head of the Department of Linguistics, stressed the significance of computational tools in modern linguistics and encouraged innovative approaches among participants. Dr. Shabir Ahmad Parah from the Department of Electronics & Instrumentation Technology discussed the interdisciplinary nature of the training, noting how technology enhances research precision and efficiency. Prof. Musavir Ahmad, Head of the Department of Linguistics, welcomed attendees by underscoring the need to learn and utilize specialized software tools to stay aligned with emerging trends in linguistic research and pedagogy. The workshop included expert sessions and hands-on training with software such as Flex and Praat, providing participants with practical experience in linguistic data processing and phonetic analysis. The event saw active engagement from research scholars and students from the Department of Linguistics at the Main Campus, who gained valuable insights into the application of these tools in their academic and research endeavors.
