Srinagar : In a major technological breakthrough, the National Institute of Technology Srinagar has secured a patent for an innovative system aimed at modernising the traditional Hamaam through artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT)-based automation.

The patented invention, titled “An Automated Temperature Control System for Underfloor Heating,” has been developed by Dr. Saniya Zahoor, Dr. Shabir A. Sofi, and Syed Farmaan Ali from the Department of Information Technology and Engineering.

The traditional Hamaam, a heating system prevalent in Kashmir and similar cold regions, has been a vital source of warmth during severe winters. However, conventional Hamaam systems often require constant manual oversight and can lead to inefficient fuel consumption. A new innovative system has been developed to overcome these challenges by integrating smart technologies with traditional heating methods. This advanced system utilizes IoT-enabled sensors and AI algorithms to manage underfloor heating in real time. It features an automated hopper that regulates the supply of ignition material to a combustion chamber located beneath the floor. By continuously monitoring environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and wind speed, the system ensures optimal heating performance. An AI-driven module dynamically assesses fuel needs, activating the fuel feed mechanism as necessary to enhance energy efficiency and reduce waste. Additional components of the system include a controlled ignition unit and a motorized ash-removal mechanism, which contribute to cleaner and more efficient operation. The system allows for precise control of temperature and humidity based on user preferences and surrounding conditions. This innovation significantly minimizes the need for human intervention while improving operational efficiency, safety, and user comfort. The development represents a notable achievement by NIT Srinagar, showcasing the application of advanced technology to address specific regional challenges. The patented system emphasizes automation, efficiency, and sustainability, with the potential to revolutionize traditional heating practices in cold climates. Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, Director of NIT Srinagar, highlighted that the patent exemplifies the institute’s dedication to innovation that meets local needs. Prof. RoohieNaaz Mir, In-charge Director and Dean of Research and Consultancy, noted that such initiatives inspire faculty and students to create indigenous technologies tailored to local requirements, reinforcing NIT Srinagar’s role in impactful research. Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman emphasized that this innovation marks a significant advancement towards developing smart, energy-efficient solutions for cold regions, addressing real-world challenges while contributing to technological progress and sustainable development.
