Raipur : The Khelo India Tribal Games witnessed a golden moment for the Sonowal family of Assam, as cousins Monika Sonowal and Dhimpi Sonowal clinched gold medals in weightlifting.

Monika, hailing from Dhanajha district of Assam, won gold in the 48kg category on Friday, while her cousin Dhimpi secured gold in the 69kg category on Saturday, marking a proud moment for their family.

Recalling the moment she heard her parents had seen her victory, saying, “It was such an emotional moment. My parents were watching the match on their mobile phones, and when they saw that I had won gold, I could feel their joy and pride even from afar. It made all the hard work and training worth it. That feeling is something I will never forget.”

Monika, who competed in the 48kg category is pursuing a BA 2nd year, recalled the emotional moment of victory.

“My parents watched the match live on their mobile phones. It was very nerve-wracking. When I won, it felt like touching the sky. My dream is to represent India at the international level,” she said.

Speaking about her journey, she said, “It all started in school. That’s where I developed an interest in weightlifting and began participating in school competitions. This achievement is very special for our family. Our father and uncle are masons and daily wagers, so winning gold is a dream come true for us.”

Dhimpi, who trains rigorously for national-level competitions, added, she was inspired by the local youth who participate in multiple games. If boys can move forward, why should women remain behind? This motivated me to push harder every day,” she said.

Dhimpi says she is currently staying at hostel and is studying in BA 1st year

“I started in 2020 with yoga and then moved to weightlifting. Training is very important. My father always tells me that he will support me despite hardships, and I hope their prayers are always with me.”

Couches of both cousins at the event lauded the performances, saying, “These young athletes embody the spirit of Khelo India, talent, perseverance, and determination. Their success will inspire many more girls and boys from tribal regions to pursue sports seriously, they added.
