Jammu :Ticket checking staff of the Jammu Division of Northern Railway returned a passenger’s bag containing cash and important documents after it was accidentally left behind at Jammu railway station, officials said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday when a passenger travelling from Patna to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra on Train No. 12355 — Archana Express — inadvertently left his bag on the platform after alighting at Jammu. The passenger, who was seated on berth number 53 in coach S3, had reportedly boarded another train from Jammu to Katra to continue his pilgrimage.

According to railway officials, Chief Ticket Inspector Abdul Rashid, who was on duty at the station, noticed an unattended bag during routine checking. On inspection, the bag was found to contain clothes, important documents and Rs 20,000 in cash. “During station checking, an unclaimed bag was found. Upon verification, documents inside the bag helped identify the owner,” an official said.

The ticket inspector located the passenger’s contact number from the documents and informed him about the recovery. The passenger was subsequently asked to return to Jammu railway station to claim his belongings.

Railway authorities said the bag was handed over to the passenger in the presence of the Government Railway Police, following due verification procedures. The passenger expressed gratitude to the railway staff for their prompt action and honesty in safeguarding his belongings.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal lauded the efforts of the ticket checking staff, stating that the Jammu Division remains committed to passenger safety and the security of their belongings.

“The Jammu Division is always committed to the safety of its passengers and the security of their luggage. Such promptness enhances passenger confidence in railway services. The Railways appreciates such efficient employees,” he said. Officials said the incident reflects the vigilance and integrity of railway personnel, adding that staff are regularly sensitised to ensure lost and found items are handled with transparency and accountability. The Jammu Division of Northern Railway caters to thousands of passengers daily, including pilgrims heading to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. Railway authorities reiterated their appeal to passengers to remain vigilant about their belongings while travelling and to promptly report any loss to on-duty staff or railway police.
