New Delhi: India on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict in the West Asia region, warning of serious humanitarian, economic and security consequences, and reiterated its call for restraint, dialogue and diplomacy.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi had conveyed its concern at the onset of hostilities in Iran and the Gulf region on February 28, urging all sides to avoid escalation and prioritise civilian safety.

“Unfortunately, in the holy month of Ramadan, the situation in the region has deteriorated significantly and continuously,” the official spokesperson said, noting that the conflict has intensified in recent days and spread to other countries.

The government said the rising casualties and mounting destruction, coupled with disruption to normal life and economic activity, were a matter of “great anxiety” for India, given its proximity and deep stakes in the region’s stability.

Nearly one crore Indian citizens live and work across the Gulf region, the statement noted, underscoring that their safety and well-being remain a top priority. “We cannot be impervious to any development that negatively affects them,” it said.

The government also flagged concerns over disruptions to trade and energy supply chains that pass through the region, cautioning that any major disturbance could have serious implications for the Indian economy. India further voiced strong opposition to attacks on merchant shipping, pointing out that some Indian nationals have been killed or reported missing in recent days as a result of such incidents.

“In this background, India strongly reiterates its call for dialogue and diplomacy. We raise our voice clearly in favour of an early end to the conflict,” the spokesperson said, expressing grief over the loss of lives.

The statement said Indian embassies and consulates in affected countries remain in close contact with nationals and community organisations, issuing regular advisories and extending assistance to those stranded. Missions have been directed to proactively address consular issues arising from the conflict.

New Delhi also said it is in touch with governments in the region and other key international partners. The Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister have held discussions with their counterparts regarding the evolving situation.

“The Government will continue to closely monitor the evolving situation and take relevant decisions in the national interest,” the statement added.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions across West Asia, raising concerns globally over regional stability, civilian safety, energy security and maritime trade routes.
