Jammu- Srinagar Distance will be covered in less than Five Hours

Srinagar : In a significant step towards strengthening rail connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir, Northern Railway has extended the operation of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express trains up to Jammu. This long-standing demand of the people of the region has now been fulfilled, bringing faster, safer and more reliable travel options to thousands of passengers.

Responding to the demand of the people, Railways has now extended Vande Bharat trains up to Jammu, ensuring seamless connectivity between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.

Extension of Train No 26401/26402 Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra – Srinagar – Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Vande Bharat Express up to Jammu Tawi, with effect from 01.03.2026
With this extension, passengers can now travel between Jammu and Srinagar in less than five hours, a substantial reduction in travel time compared to road journeys. Road connectivity in this region, particularly along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, often faces disruptions due to landslides, heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions. The extension of Vande Bharat services offers a dependable, all-weather alternative that ensures safety, comfort and punctuality. The semi high-speed Vande Bharat trains are equipped with modern passenger amenities, enhanced safety features and improved ride comfort, making the journey not only faster but also more convenient. The extension is expected to greatly benefit local residents, promote tourism, facilitate trade and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.

The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project was dedicated to the nation on 6th June 2025 by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Following its dedication, there was a strong and consistent demand from residents, traders, students and tourists to connect Jammu directly with Srinagar through a semi high-speed Vande Bharat service.
This milestone reflects the continued commitment of the Government of India and Indian Railways towards enhancing infrastructure and fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir.
