Kokernag encounter day 3: Search to flush out militants continues, additional forces deployed

Srinagar: Security forces on Sunday neutralised three terrorists during a joint operation in the rugged terrains of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district under Operation Trashi-I and searches are underway in the region.
An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in the forested belt of the district. Earlier in the day, two terrorists were killed in a significant development in the ongoing anti-terror offensive, taking the total number of militants neutralised in the operation to three.
Army Spokesman said the body and weapon of the third terrorist have been recovered from the encounter site. His identity and group affiliation were being ascertained. In a post on X, the White Knight Corps said that troops of Counter-Insurgency Force (CIF) Delta, operating in close coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), neutralised the third terrorist during continued operations. “The pursuit continues — no space, no sanctuary for those who seek to undermine stability,” he said. According to the Army, the operation was launched following actionable intelligence inputs received from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Intelligence Bureau and the Army’s own sources regarding the presence of terrorists in the dense forest areas of Chatroo in Kishtwar.
Acting on the credible intelligence, a deliberate joint operation was initiated under Operation Trashi-I to track and neutralise the militants operating in the region. Contact with the terrorists was re-established at around 11 am in difficult and heavily forested terrain, where troops re-engaged them in a fierce gunfight.
During the exchange of fire, security forces dominated the encounter site and neutralised two terrorists earlier in the day. Two AK-47 rifles and other war-like stores were recovered from the spot. Meanwhile, in a separate post, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said: “Focus, Fortitude, Perseverance, Precision, Coordination and Synergy: Op Trashi! You Can Run But You Can’t Hide.”
Operation Trashi-I, launched in January, has been focusing on flushing out terrorists from the challenging forested and mountainous areas of Kishtwar, including Chatroo, Sonnar, Dolgam and Dichhar, and has involved multiple cordon-and-search operations and firefights. Search operations were continuing in the area to ensure that no terrorist manages to escape, officials said.
