Paras Health Srinagar Successfully Removes One of the Rarest Bone Cancers in the World

Srinagar : Paras Health Srinagar has successfully treated a patient with a rare malignant tumor known as chondrosarcoma, which affected the upper part of the breastbone. The patient presented with localized swelling, and imaging confirmed the presence of this uncommon bone tumor. Due to the aggressive nature of chondrosarcoma, the medical team opted for complete surgical removal, which is the most definitive treatment for such cases.
The complex surgery was conducted by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Shah Naveed from Surgical Oncology, alongside Dr. Syed Asrar Qadri and Dr. Mudasir from Thoracic Surgery, with support from the Anesthesia team and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Chondrosarcoma of the manubrium sterni is extremely rare, with primary tumors of the sternum accounting for less than 1% of all primary bone neoplasms. The proximity of these tumors to critical chest structures makes their management particularly challenging, necessitating careful planning to ensure complete tumor removal while maintaining chest wall stability and respiratory function. Dr. Murtuza Habib, Facility Director at Paras Health Srinagar, emphasized that such cases test both surgical expertise and the strength of clinical systems within an institution. The successful outcome of this surgery reflects the preparedness of the medical teams and their commitment to enhancing treatment capabilities in the region. During the procedure, the affected portion of the breastbone and surrounding tissue were removed in one piece to ensure complete tumor clearance, followed by reconstruction of the chest wall to preserve its integrity and function. Post-surgery, the patient remained stable, with chest tubes removed as drainage decreased. Follow-up scans indicated satisfactory recovery, and the surgical wound healed well. The patient is now clinically stable and is set for discharge. This case underscores the importance of early diagnosis and a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach in managing rare bone tumors, highlighting the need for timely evaluation of persistent chest wall swellings and the growing capacity to address complex oncological and thoracic conditions with comprehensive critical care support.
