IGP Kashmir reviews security for VP’s visit at top meet, KU finalize arrangements at key meet

Srinagar : Ahead of scheduled Kashmir visit of Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan on February 26, Inspector General of Police Kashmir, V K Birdi, chaired a high-level review meeting at Police Control Room (PCR) in Srinagar, while another meeting was held within the campus of University of Kashmir, officials said on Friday.
They said that the Vice-President will attend the 21st convocation ceremony of the KU as chief guest. He will distribute awards and gold medals among the meritorious students. He will also deliver the convocation address.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Minister of Higher Education, Sakina Itoo and others will also attend the convocation slated for next week, officials added.
Earlier in the day IGP Birdi directed officers to maintain heightened alertness and strengthen security measures across Kashmir ahead of Vice-President’s upcoming visit.
An official said that while chairing a security review meeting at the Police Control Room (PCR) here, IGP Birdi asked officers to intensify intelligence gathering and ensure effective coordination among all security agencies to counter potential threats.
He stressed the need to reinforce security at vulnerable locations, secure vital installations and critical infrastructure, and carry out effective area domination, including night patrolling.
The IGP directed that round-the-clock patrolling be intensified in both urban and rural areas, with enhanced surveillance at key entry and exit points. He also instructed officers to ensure the strategic deployment of counter-insurgency teams and quick reaction teams to respond promptly to any emerging situation.
Birdi told officers to brief personnel thoroughly on standard operating procedures and keep close watch on sensitive areas to enable immediate action against suspicious activities.
Senior officers from Police, Army, CRPF, BSF, ITBP, SSB, CID, traffic and Railway units attended the meeting and presented security plans for the visit.
The IGP said all agencies must work in coordination to maintain a secure environment and ensure safety during the visit.
The officials informed that another meeting was held in the convocation hall of the University of Kashmir wherein the officials from the varsity, police and civil administration took part.
They said that the agenda of the meeting was to review the security measures and the arrangements for the Vice-President’s Kashmir visit.
“They reviewed the measures to be taken for the security of the chief guest C P Radhakrishnan who is scheduled to arrive here on 26th February for the 21st convocation of KU,” the official said
