Srinagar : Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) and the Jammu & Kashmir Police have launched a two-week training program on “Tech-Infused Tourism Policing” in Srinagar, aimed at enhancing police personnel’s capacity to manage tourist safety and crisis situations using advanced technology.
Dr. Mahesh A. Tripathi, Director of RRU J&K Campus, emphasized the initiative’s focus on addressing emerging security challenges in the tourism sector through technological integration, highlighting RRU’s role in providing specialized security training. The program, inaugurated by Superintendent of Police Srinagar, Mr. Shah Umer, underscores the importance of tourism policing as a critical component of internal security. He noted the need for law enforcement to adapt to evolving security dynamics and increasing tourist inflows, advocating for continuous upskilling and the adoption of modern technologies to enhance preparedness. Dr. Bilquees Dar led the introductory session, outlining a curriculum that includes tech-enabled policing tools, crisis response mechanisms, and inter-agency coordination, which are essential for maintaining stability in sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir. The training will focus on proactive security measures, ensuring that officers are equipped to handle the unique challenges posed by high tourist volumes. Mr. Bhawani Sinh Rathore, Director of the School of Internal Security and SMART Policing at RRU, provided insights into the economic significance of tourism, noting India’s position as a top global destination and the necessity for robust tourist safety mechanisms. Discussions also addressed operational issues such as the safety of female tourists and the importance of police image management to facilitate positive tourist experiences. Key recommendations from the inaugural session included enhancing coordination with trade associations, regulating transport services, and deploying GPS-enabled systems. The establishment of tourist crisis intervention teams and the development of a dedicated tourist assistance mobile application were also proposed.
